Description

This training is designed to provide an overview of stimulant use disorder for all healthcare organization staff including providers, nurses, counselors and other non-clinical staff. The training reviews stigma, identifying stimulant overdose, managing acute stimulant intoxication, de-escalation techniques, and evidence-based treatment for people who use stimulants.

To be eligible for CEUs, you must have your camera turned on so we can see you during the training.

Speakers

Justin Alves, RN, MSN, ACRN, CARN, CNE

Justin is a Clinical Nurse Educator for Boston Medical Center's OBAT TTA team, with specific expertise in infectious disease and their co-occurrence with substance use disorders, community outreach, and harm reduction. He serves as an expert on OBAT TTA's SUD Care Continuum ECHO team and sits on the item writing committee for the Addictions Nursing Certification Board. Justin has dedicated his career to caring for patients living with HIV/AIDS and suffering from substance use disorders across the continuum of care. He is an AIDS Certified Registered Nurse, a Certified Addictions Registered Nurse, and a member of the Gamma Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau. Justin received his BSN from Northeastern University in 2013 and received his MSN, with a focus in nursing education, from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth in 2020.

Andrea Jodat, DNP, FNP-BC, CARN-AP

Andrea is a Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Educator for the OBAT TTA Program at Boston Medical Center with clinical interest and expertise in women's health, individuals experiencing homelessness, and chronic disease management. She is committed to serving vulnerable populations and works per diem at Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program; Andrea has also conducted international healthcare work in Haiti. She is a term lecturer and preceptor for nurse practitioner students at the MGH Institute of Health Professions (MGH IHP). Andrea received her Masters of Science in Nursing in 2011 and her Doctorate of Nursing Practice in 2018, both from the MGH IHP. She is board certified in addictions nursing through the Addictions Nursing Certification Board.

Objectives

Participants will:

• Understand the role of psychostimulants in the overdose epidemic and recognize population disparities.
• Recognize signs of stimulant intoxication, overdose (overamping) and withdrawal.
• Identify evidenced-based interventions for acute stimulant intoxication and post-acute care for StUD.
• Describe the basic principles of de-escalation to promote safety for patients with active stimulant use and their caregivers. 
• Identify health risks associated with stimulant use and how to apply harm reduction interventions.
