Description

THIS TRAINING IS BEING HELD VIA ZOOM TELECONFERENCING TECHNOLOGY. In order to receive CE credit, you must have video enabled and turned on when you join the meeting so we can see your face, in addition to registering through this page. Complete information for how to join via Zoom will be emailed to you the week of the training.

This training will cover the basics of addiction medicine including: the disease model of substance use disorders; the epidemiology of the addiction epidemic; an overview of major substances of use including alcohol, opioids, and stimulants; and treatment options for patients with substance use disorders.

Intended audience

All medical and non-medical staff who wish to have a greater understanding of addiction, including the following:

• Nurses
• Advanced Practice Nurses
• Specialty Nurses particularly impacted by patients with SUD (e.g., cardiology, infectious disease, endocrinology, surgery, peripartum care, etc.)
• Front-line staff, behavioral health professionals, and other medical teams

Objectives

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

• Describe the disease model of addiction
• Recognize the scope of the addiction epidemic in the U.S. beyond the use of opioids alone
• Identify alcohol, opioids, and stimulants as substances of misuse and the associated signs of intoxication and withdrawal of each substance
• Differentiate the treatment recommendations for patients who use alcohol, opioids, and/or stimulants, including medication and behavioral health interventions
• Recognize and respond to a suspected drug/alcohol overdose

Accreditation information

Boston Medical Center grants 2.00 hours to all nurses who attend, complete the evaluation, and complete the post test.
