Description

This course comprises the [first / second] half of the eight-hour buprenorphine waiver course. ALL REGISTRANTS must also register for the first half of the course on December 12. The full eight-hour waiver course prepares physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants to prescribe buprenorphine to treat opioid use disorder in their office. The curriculum includes the science of addiction as a brain disorder, the pharmacology of buprenorphine, and the regulatory requirements around prescribing this medication. Attendees will learn to screen patients for treatment with buprenorphine and to manage the medication along with the patient's other medical needs in an office setting such as a primary care clinic. The course fulfills 8 hours of the training needed to obtain a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine. The Drug Addiction Treatment Act of 2000 (DATA 2000) requires physicians to complete 8 hours of approved training in order to be eligible for a waiver, and nurse practitioners and physician assistants to complete 24 hours. Check-in for the course will be from 12:30 to 1:00 pm and the training will run from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. This is an in-person training. There will not be an option to attend via webinar.

Objectives

Upon completion of both Part 1 and Part 2 of this training, the participants will (be able to): Have the training required to apply for a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine to their patients with opioid dependence (addiction), Identify and assess patients who are appropriate for treatment with buprenorphine, Have the specific knowledge concerning the use of buprenorphine to manage opioid dependence in the outpatient setting, Discuss the psychiatric and medical co-morbidities associated with opioid addiction.

Accreditation information

Boston Medical Center grants 7.7 nursing contact hours to nurses who complete this program. You must stay for the entire program and complete the evaluation form. This program has no commercial support. Faculty and planners have no vested interests and there are no conflicts of interest. There will be no discussion of off label uses of drugs. Boston Medical Center is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by American Nurses Association, Massachusetts, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. AMA Credit Designation Statement American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) designates this live educational activity for a maximum of 8 (eight) AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
