This full-day course reviews topics covered in the certification exam for addictions nursing and is intended to support nurses preparing to sit for the exam.

Boston Medical Center is sponsoring exam review courses for RNs and NPs working in the addiction field who have an interest in becoming a Certified Addictions Registered Nurse (CARN) or a Certified Addictions Registered Nurse - Advanced Practice (CARN-AP). The certification exam is open to nurses with at least 2,000 hours experience (equivalent to 1 year full-time) in addiction treatment, and is offered year round at testing sites nationwide. This course is intended to assist nurses in preparing for the exam. For more information about the CARN and CARN AP certification: http://intnsa.org/certification Training is free to nurses who plan to take the exam. Due to high demand for these courses, a $50 deposit check, payable to MA IntNSA, is required to secure your spot. The check will be returned to you when you attend the training. In the event that you do not attend the training, your check will be donated the International Nurses Society for Addictions, Massachusetts chapter (MA IntNSA). Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners, with experience treating patients with addiction, who intend to sit for the CARN or CARN-AP exam.
By the end of this certification review program, participants will be able to: Identify the major categories of substances of abuse, their neurobiology, impact, withdrawal effects, and treatments, Discuss the biological, psychosocial, cognitive, and spiritual problems resulting from substance abuse and dependence, Apply nursing process in identifying, planning, assessing and implementing care for patients diagnosed with substance use and addiction disorders.
Boston Medical Center (BMC), Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), and the Massachusetts Bureau of Substance Abuse Services (BSAS).
Boston Medical Center grants 7.25 nursing contact hours to nurses who complete this program. You must stay for the entire program, and complete the evaluation form. This program has no commercial support. Faculty and planners have no vested interests, and there are no conflicts of interest. There will be no discussion of off label uses of drugs. Boston Medical Center is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by American Nurses Association, Massachusetts, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
