Description

This training will provide an overview of medications for addiction treatment including review of treatment philosophy for managing substance use disorder in the outpatient setting, review of the opioid epidemic and outpatient treatment settings for medications for opioid use disorder.

You must have your camera on for us to be able to see you in order to receive continuing education credits.

The staff and affiliates of the Medford Office of Prevention and Outreach.

Speakers

Justin Alves, RN, MSN, ACRN, CARN, CNE

Justin is a Clinical Nurse Educator for Boston Medical Center's OBAT TTA team, with specific expertise in infectious disease and their co-occurrence with substance use disorders, community outreach, and harm reduction. He serves as an expert on OBAT TTA's SUD Care Continuum ECHO team and sits on the item writing committee for the Addictions Nursing Certification Board. Justin has dedicated his career to caring for patients living with HIV/AIDS and suffering from substance use disorders across the continuum of care. He is an AIDS Certified Registered Nurse, a Certified Addictions Registered Nurse, and a member of the Gamma Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau. Justin received his BSN from Northeastern University in 2013 and received his MSN, with a focus in nursing education, from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth in 2020.

Annie Potter, MSN, MPH, NP, CARN-AP

Annie is a Nurse Practitioner at Boston Medical Center and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. Annie educates and supports health care providers on best practices in the treatment of substance use disorders and serves as the Medical Director for the Massachusetts Office Based Addiction Treatment ECHO. Prior to joining BMC, Annie practiced at a community health center in Baltimore, MD, where she established and served as the clinical lead for the city's first walk-in HIV treatment and prevention program. She is board-certified in addictions and holds specialty certifications for the treatment of HIV and Hepatitis C. Annie earned her Masters of Nursing and Masters of Public Health from the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and Bloomberg School of Public Health, respectively.

Objectives

After attending this training, participants will:

• Name 3 FDA approved medications for the treatment of opioid use disorder.
• Name 3 FDA appoved medications for the treatment of alcohol use disorder.
• Identify at least 2 strategies for low barrier access to medications for addiction treatment.

Accreditation information

Boston Medical Center grants 1.50 hours to all nurses who attend and complete the evaluation. Boston Medical Center is approved as a provider of continuing professional development by American Nurses Association, Massachusetts, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

The lecture has been approved by The Network of Professional Education at Boston University School of Social Work, accredited by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Board of Social Work Registration, to provide 1.50 credit hours.

BMC Grayken Center of Addiction TTA has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7188. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. BMC Grayken Center of Addiction TTA is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs. For this program, 1.50 contact hours will be offered to participants who attend the training and complete the evaluation.
